We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), that was formed on 7th July 2017, and registered by the Charities Commission on 26th March 2018, delivering a fresh approach to end domestic abuse in Southend-on-Sea, Essex and Thurrock, and the wider community in the South of England. We stand on the shoulders of giants, survivors of domestic abuse, who set up Southend’s first women’s refuge, over 40 years ago. We are thankful to Southend-on-Sea Domestic Abuse Projects SOSDAP (formerly Southend Women’s Aid) and National Women’s Aid, for their wisdom, support and solidarity that has helped to establish Safe Steps to become the lead domestic abuse service provider in the area.
We provide help and support to anyone who has experienced domestic abuse within the Essex and Southend area. We receive nearly 2000 referrals a year, of which 65% of them become active cases. The support each person receives is a holistic approach, ensuring that they stay safe and are equipped to deal with what they have been through. The services we provide are our helpline, our centre where group and one to one work takes place and our refuge which provides temporary accommodation.
