How we care
Wellbeing at Cynthia Spencer – Our objectives are to allow our patients and their families to maintain the normality of daily life and maintain physical function and independence for as long as possible.
Our service is available to anyone over the age of 18 currently facing a life limiting illness, this can include advanced cancer, neurological conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease and Parkinson’s, advanced respiratory and cardiovascular disease and dementia.
The Inpatient Ward
The inpatient ward at Cynthia Spencer Hospice has 16 beds and is supported by a team of Nurses, Doctors and other Health Care Professionals who are experts in palliative care – caring for someone who is no longer able to have a treatment to cure them.
We specialise in helping you and your loved ones to get on top of difficult symptoms, deal with any physical pain and reduce emotional distress.
In the Home – We understand that not all patients wish to come into the Hospice to be cared for.
Our aim is to help patients who choose to remain at home, in their own surroundings, during their illness to achieve this. We maintain the same ethos of care as delivered in Cynthia Spencer Hospice: to maintain dignity, assist in controlling symptoms and enable patients to make decisions about their care.
Advance Care Plan – A key focus of the Practice Development Team’s work is Advance Care Planning. None of us know exactly how our health and abilities might change in the future and even though we cannot see into the future, we might have some ideas about the sort of help and care we would or would not want.
Planning ahead, using an Advance Care Plan, gives you the opportunity to think about, talk about and write down your wishes, preferences and priorities for your care. This will give everyone a clear idea of the things that are important to you, if there comes a time when you cannot express your wishes and preferences yourself.
Patient & Family Support
Upon arrival you will be greeted by one of our nursing team and shown to your bed. The medical and nursing staff will introduce themselves to you and you will be able to discuss your care in a private, safe and comfortable setting.
You will be cared for by our expert team of doctors, nurses and therapists. Should you or your family wish to speak to any of the doctors or consultants, an appointment can be arranged for you by speaking with one of the nursing staff.
Emotional Care – Coping with a life limiting illness is a huge challenge for patients, friends and family, including children. The Patient and Family Liaison Worker is able to offer practical and emotional support including help with planning for your care following discharge from Hospice.
Providing an opportunity for you to talk in confidence to someone who is not directly involved in the situation and by sharing your worries and fears, you can feel less overwhelmed by them. It can also help you feel more in control even though there may be some things you cannot change.
