Under the EU’s new GDPR rules and regulations which came into force on 25 May 2018, if your business processes the personal data of people within the European Economic Area (EEA) but has no EEA presence of its own (e.g. a branch in an EEA state), you will need to appoint a ‘representative’ within the EEA if your processing of that personal data is more than merely occasional. If you have regular EU or EEA clients, customers or suppliers, or even employees based in the EEA, you will therefore need to appoint a representative.
