Helping families deal with rare childhood cancers

Formerly known as Hugs from Henry, Hugs Children Cancer Charity was founded in Plymouth in 2015 to offer support to families across Devon and Cornwall who are dealing with childhood cancer. Whether emotional support, making a memory or helping families keep in touch, Hugs Children’s Cancer charity provides them with a place to turn.

The journey began when the Hallam family received the devastating blow of a cancer diagnosis for their oldest child, Henry, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, Neuroblastoma, at the tender age of 3. Following 14 months of aggressive and invasive treatment which saw the family living 120 miles away from their home and support network in Plymouth, Henry’s mum, Elsbeth, having given birth to her second child whilst living away, wanted to ensure that families facing the fear and loneliness that had experienced, would not be alone in their journey.

As a charity, the reach of the help and support we provide continues to grow, and we rely heavily on our fundraising efforts to be able to continue our work. Whilst we currently operate 2 retail shops in Plymstock, the fundraising and organisational running of the charity is still only carried out by 2 people, the co-founder and CEO Elsbeth Hallam and Fundraiser Laura Riden.
