Pier Facts

  • Brighton Pier was opened on May 20, 1899, and cost £137,000 to build
  • It is 1,760 feet long and contains 85 miles of planking
  • Its full name is the Brighton Marine Palace Pier
  • The 119-year-old structure is a Grade II listed building
  • More than 6,200,000 people visit the pier every year(figures from Coast Magazine)
  • Eclectic Bar Group purchased the pier in 2016
  • It has featured in Carry On at Your Convenience, Mirrormask, The Persuaders, the Doctor Who serial The Leisure Hive (1980) and the 2007 film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and the Who’s concept album and film Quadrophenia.
  • It was nearly destroyed before it was finished. During a storm in 1896, timber from another pier repeatedly slammed into the new structure, causing substantial damage
